Computer Jargon

  • ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) – a device that enables both internet usage and telephone calls simultaneously.
  • BANDWIDTH – this measures the speed in which your data is transmitted.  This is measured in bits per minute.
  • BROADBAND – a service that enables huge amounts of datato be transferred at high speeds.  Featured Broadband Providers
  • BFWA (Broadband Fixed Wireless Access) – broadband without any wires/leads.  Connection is made via an aerial.
  • FIREWALL – blocks any unauthorised access to a network.
  • IP ADDRESS – the computer equivalent of a post code.  This is used to identify servers or users n the internet.
  • ISP (Internet Service Provider) – the company that provides your internet access.  Featured Broadband Providers
  • LAN (Local Area Network) – a group of computers/devices that share a common communications line/wireless link.
  • Mb/Mb’s (Megabyte) – computer memory/storage is measured in Megabytes/Mb’s.
  • MICRO-FILTERS – a small device connected to your phone socket in order to avoid interference/crackling whilst making telephone calls when the internet is in use.
  • MOBILE WIRELESS – broadband on your mobile phone.
  • MODEM (Modulator-Demodulator) – a device that enables a computer to convert information from the telephone/cable line or transmitor to your computer.
  • MP3 – a format of keeping sound files on your computer i.e, music.
  • MULTIMEDIA – this is the integration of multiple forms of media such as graphics, video, audio etc..
  • PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant) – an electronic pocket sized organiser/computer.
  • RADSL (Rate-adaptive Asymmetric Digital Subscriber) – this device autimatically adjusts speed depending on the telephone line quality.
  • SDSL/DSL (Symetric Digital Subscriber Line) – modem technology allowing higher speed data to be sent over existing telephone lines.
  • STREAMING – this allows you to view audio,video or any multimedia element on your pc.
  • UPSTREAM – this is simply the ability to send information over a network.
  • USB MODEM/DONGLE (Universal Serial Bus) – an electronic  device that must be attached to a computer to enable it to use protected software.  A Dongle accompanies software to prevent unauthorised copying of programs.  Although each make and model varies they all share a small modem and a receiver which will give you access to the internet at broadband speeds.  You simply plug the Dongle in to the USB Port on your computer/laptop to receive Mobile Broadband.  Mobile Broadband Providers
  • VoD (Video on Demand) – this is a method of showing streams on your computer.
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) – A device allowing users to make phone calls whilst using the internet.
  • WI-FI (Wireless Fidelity) – a devise that allows you to connect without wires to your Local Area Network.
  • WIRELESS BROADBAND – the internet access without wires/leads.  Connection made via an aerial.
